Biotech Research (BTEC210G) is offered in the 秋天 semester and provides an exposure to a variety of skills utlilized by researchers.
Last week, students learned how to use RNAi to inactivate 2 different genes in C. elegans, a microscopic worm found in soil. 在实验室里, they placed the worms onto plates with bacteria containing DNA, 激活RNAi通路. 48 hours later, they examined the worms to observe the resulting characteristics.
This technique is used to determine the role of genes in organisms and is even used in treating medical conditions such as polyneuropathy manifestations of hATTR amyloidosis. The students also participate in a semester-long research project focusing on discovering novel antibiotics through the global Tiny Earth program.
